Manuka honey is made from nectar from the flowers of the manuka tree. The manuka tree grows in New Zealand and contains the substance methylglyoxal (MGO), which is transferred to the honey and distinguishes manuka honey from other honey. The amount of MGO in the honey varies and is stated on Manuka Health products as a number describing how many milligrams of MGO the honey contains per kilogram.
Most people consume the honey as a type of dietary supplement by taking a spoonful as it is, but it can also be used on yoghurt, for example. However, do not heat the honey by using it in tea, for example.
